How do you put a look together? Is it a functional choice or one lead by your love of fashion — the secret to creating a look is finding the right balance that works for you. Putting on clothes is a functional decision, but it can also be one that should inspire creativity and make you feel good.
Here are my tips on how to put a look together in 7 easy steps.
1. CHECK THE WEATHER APP ON YOUR PHONE
My outfit always reflects the weather outside. Every evening and just before I leave the house, I quickly glance at my phone to ensure that my look can navigate me through whatever the weather throws at me. Don’t be that person standing in the rain without an umbrella.
2. START WITH ONE ITEM
Now that I have established the weather situation, I can get a better picture of what I want to wear.
I start with my trousers as I have the most pants out of any clothing category in my wardrobe. By choosing it first, I get the difficult part done. I usually try and go for the trousers that I haven’t worn for a while.
3. BUILD THE LOOK
Now that I know what trousers I am wearing, I can make some decisions. My tops are usually in a plain colour that clashes or compliments my pants. If it’s warm, my go-to is the roll neck jumper. For warmer days, I keep it simple with a basic tee.
4. CREATE A STYLE ATTITUDE
When building a look, it helps to know what style attitude you want to convey. Style attitudes range from smart, to streetwear, to Scandinavian, to sartorial. When it comes to my style attitude, I try and combine the worlds of casual and modern sartorial. This means always adding a sporty touch to the sartorial elements within my look.
5. COLOUR THEORY
Now the fun begins, styling colour can be quite tricky, but with practice, you will understand what colours work well together. Monochromatic styling is a safe bet allowing you to play with the same colour in the same look. You can also style complimentary colours. The options are endless. Choose colours that reflect your mood, your style attitude, the weather or even the occasion.
6. THE FINAL DETAILS
Completing the look is where I add my final details. I always wear a silver bracelet with a key chain or keyring. I also utilise my belt as an extension of my look.
7. THE SHOES
When it comes to shoes, it’s an easy game. I usually either find a way for my shoes to be a contrast to my outfit. An example is wearing trainers with tailoring.
