Summer is the season where you can showcase the best of your wardrobe, and you should have a shirt for all eventualities, for the unbearable summer days in the city, to the beach holiday getaways.
Think of your shirt as a way to express your character, if you dull and boring well, then a plain basic white shirt is for you. If you have a personality that is soaked in narcissism, then an attention-seeking bold printed shirt has your name on it.
Here are my favourite men’s summer shirts you should own:
1. THE RESORT SHIRT
The resort shirt is THE ultimate summer shirt to have in your summer wardrobe. Every season I get excited to see what designs will be trending from stripes to chevron, to animal print. You are bound to find a style that can carry you through summer.
The resort short is not just for a resort holiday; it can take you from the beach to city streets, to the packed out festivals all you have to do is adjust how it is styled.
2. THE SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT
If you are not a fan of the revere collar, then a standard shirt sleeve shirt is the perfect alternative. Similar to the resort shirt, it is available in a plethora of designs to choose. My favourite for a short sleeve shirt is a classic vertical stripe.
3. THE PRINTED LONG SLEEVE SHIRT
For the cooler evenings on holiday when you are out for dinner, a long sleeve shirt comes in handy. I like to push the boat out and have the most elaborate printed shirt I can find. I remember a few seasons ago Zara had the most fantastic forest print shirts in a lightweight material that I was obsessed with wearing.
4. THE LINEN SHIRT
Linen is synonymous with summer due to the lightweight and breathable characteristics of the linen fabric. A linen shirt will allow you to breathe and not feel overwhelmed with wearing.
5. THE SEERSUCKER SHIRT
The puckered seersucker texture should never be overlooked when it comes to choosing a summer shirt. Along with linen, seersucker is another fabric that will grant you the best control of temperature due to its lightweight properties.
6. THE OVERSHIRT
For the times when you wished you had a jacket for the summer evenings or cooler summer days. Make sure your overshirt compliments your look, if you are wearing a linen look, match the fabric and texture with a linen overshirt. It’s that simple.
My summer wardrobe is not complete without my overshirt. I always pack it in my tote when I am out enjoying the sun during the day, but I still have it ready to protect me from the evening’s chill.
7. THE STAND-UP COLLAR
If you are unfortunate enough to go to work with a formal dress code, wearing a standard collar shirt can be hell. Ditch the dress code and opt for a stand-up collar(sometimes referred to as a grandad collar) by merely removing the collar you allow yourself relief from having a sweater collar.
8. THE TUNIC
Channel your inner hippy nature lover and go for a tunic style shirt. Wear as a coordinated set with the matching trousers.
