Streetwear has slowly become one of my favourite menswear styles. It borrows elements from youth street culture and combines it with grunge and athleisure to create a distinctive causal aesthetic.
It took me a while to crack the streetwear styling code, but once I found the secret, I had confidence in building the most basic to the most fashion-forward streetwear looks.
If you are unsure if you can pull off streetwear or want to dive into this style attitude, then this post is for you. Here are eleven hacks to follow the streetwear trend.
1. IT STARTS WITH WHITE SOCKS
Get yourself a good pair of white socks and buy plenty because you will need to wear them every day.
2. ROLL UP YOUR TROUSERS
Most streetwear looks show off the sock area. Roll up your tailored trousers or denim to reveal your sock game.
3. CHOOSE YOUR TROUSER
I usually wear a tailored trouser with most of my streetwear looks as I love to contrast between formal and casual.
4. DON’T FORGET DENIM
You can’t build a streetwear look without denim. Silhouette is critical when choosing your jeans of choice. I lean towards the straight/relaxed fit in a cropped length or with the trousers rolled up.
5. CHOOSE YOUR JACKET
For winter, it’s all about the oversized puffers. For warmer days, I have been obsessed with the utility jacket.
6. ADD THE ACCESSORY
7. GROUND YOUR LOOK
Ground your look with trendy sneakers. Chunky sneaker gives you a slight height boost and helps with the proportion of your streetwear look. Combine with white socks and cropped trousers, and you’ve created a classic streetwear silhouette.
If you are not a fan of thick-sole chunky trainers, go old school. You have a choice of Vans or Converse.
Track runners are also a great choice. Think New Balance or Asics
The accessories define a look, and a streetwear look is no different. Add a carabiner, wallet chain or wearable wallet to elevate your styling.
10. LAYER WITH A HOODIE
The hoodie can become a crucial layering piece in your street style —wear under tailoring, outerwear and a utility vest.
11. ROUND OFF YOUR LOOK WITH A HAT
For your hat, you have a few options. During winter, choose the fisherman beanie because covering your ears is not cool. For the warmer days, go for a cap or my favourite, the bucket hat.
